Fantastic Night for Avondale

Avondale school are absolutely delighted to have won 2 awards at the Blackburn Rovers Community Trust Awards event at Ewood Park. The Outstanding School Sports Partner award was for a school that has strived to greatly enhance the opportunities given to pupils through increased participation and embracing challenge and inspiring others. Mrs Mears deservedly won the individual Primary Star Award for demonstrating the 'Premier League Primary Stars' core values of being 'inspiring', 'ambitious', 'connected' and 'fair'.

UCLAN Science Festival

Some of the children from the Year 3 Science Club took a trip to UCLAN on Friday to take part in the Science Festival. We had a fantastic day taking part in different workshops. We watched amazing chemistry demonstrations, learnt how to be a doctor and some of them even tried some edible bugs! #ScienceClub #Science #Year3

Cross Country Success

Last night our cross country team competed in their final event of the year. It was a very hot afternoon and everyone performed brilliantly, showing determination to complete a difficult course in tough conditions. As this was the final event of the year there were awards for both individual and team positioning. Our Year 5/6 boys team came third overall, Year 3/4 boys came second and our Year 3/4 girls team won their competition! We also had an individual winner with Oliver coming third out of all Year 5/6 boys this year! Very well done to everyone and we look forward to next year's event! #Sport #Sports

Sports Day

Today in glorious sunshine KS2 held their annual sports day. Well done to everyone who competed. The winning team were Red with 540 points followed closely by Blue in 2nd with 520 and Green & Yellow ending in a draw for 3rd place with 510 points each. #PE #Sports

RE Lessons in Years 3&4

As part of RE lessons in Years 3&4 we have had some Jewish and Islamic visitors in school. #RE #Year4

Reading Den

We opened our Reading Den at lunchtime last week. It went down really well with the children and the weather helped too. Opening again tomorrow.


Year 3 have been growing cress over the last couple of week. They have done an amazing job at looking after them. They have took them home to eat! #Year3 #DT

Wire Flowers

Hindu Visitor

Vijayanti visited Year this afternoon and taught them all about Hinduism. She showed them how she prays at home, how to stay hello in a universal language and talked about the different Gods. #SchoolVisit #RE #Year3

Hindu Visitor

This morning year 6 have welcome Vijayanti to Avondale. She has been speaking to us about the Hindu faith and what it entails including the different festivals, sacred animals and the different gods they worship. The children then learnt about Rangoli patterns before attempting to make there own. A number of pictures can be seen below. #Year6 #RE

Summer Reading Challenge

During Monday's assembly we had a visit from Andrew Orr from Darwen Library. He came to talk to us about this year's reading challenge, ran by the library. It's easy to win a certificate and badge by reading just 6 books between 1st July and 30th September. What a great way to help pass the long summer holiday! Watch out for enrollment forms coming home soon! #Reading

5C Science Day

5C loved their Science Investigation Day at Darwen Vale. A particular highlight was being able to use bunsen burners. #Year5 #Science

Year 5 update

Despite Year 5's trip to Spaceport being sadly cancelled, Mr Clegg and Miss Wormald managed to bring 'rockets' to Avondale in the form of ice lollies on the yard! We are still in the process of trying to organise a last minute alternative trip. #Year5


The Year 5/6 Tennis pupils enjoyed their training session on the courts at Darwen Tennis Club on a very sunny Wednesday evening. The improvement in skills was great to see. #Year5 #Sports

4B Author Workshop at Blackburn Rovers

4B had a great day yesterday at Blackburn Rovers. They had a tour of the stadium, completed different reading activities and had a workshop with a famous poet called 'Matt Goodfellow'. They each came away with a signed book of his called 'Chicken on the Roof' and a 2019 football annual. Brilliant day had by all! #Year4 #Reading

Science Day in Year 5

5W have enjoyed a Science day at Darwen Vale today. They have visited the Science Labs and participated in a range of experiments including using bunsen burners! #Year5 #Science

Chocoholics in Y5!

Year 5 have been making chocolate in DT. We evaluated existing chocolate, tasted a variety of chocolates and looked at advertising campaigns. We then designed our own delicious bars, made the packaging in ICT and then made our own bars. Which one would you buy? #Year5 #DT #Computing

Sketching Flowers

We have been looking at different types of flowers and have used different drawing implements to sketch them. #Art #Science #Year3

Clare Balding

Year 3 have had a very special afternoon meeting author and presenter, Clare Balding. They listened to a talk at Westholme School and had a chance to get a photo with author. Some children also bought signed copies of her book. #Reading #English #SuperReaders #Year3
